“Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Fall of 2019, we used this project to further embody these notions of faith by blindfolding four dancers, taking them to a remote location and asking them to move. The dancers used the exploration of the space as a gateway into the exposure of their own fears, and an experience of their own faith.
When given more than a moment with the idea, we come to recognize that faith is not merely a pious prerequisite or accidental byproduct of religion. Much more, faith instantiates the gratitude that can be found from the universally inescapable uncertainties of life.
While disrupting the habituated visual sensory responses, I intentionally bound the blind folds to the dancers’ hands. This is because touch is argued to be are first sense, despite the visual hierarchy we live in. Thus I wanted the dancers to feel their eyes inside the palms of their hands and eventually see with their hands.
